The year may be crawling to a close, but the new music keeps flowing. There’s A Tuesday, from Christchurch, New Zealand, have released their debut EP on MEOW and already show a deft ability to combine sweet, harmony-drenched melodies with cascading dream-pop indie. The EP opens with current single, FOMO, full of 80s style reverb-soaked guitars, sparse beats and bittersweet vocals. They immediately recall the recent work of Pheobe Bridgers, both stylistically and in the twisting lyrics. The imagery of the push and pull of social pressures collide against introspection as they explore internal battles. They wrap it all up in a wonderfully hypnotic and crisp package.
It’s in examining the simplicity of the day-to-day where they shine. Amsterdam continues in the same vein. The idea of marching forward, taking the risks that hold us back from what we dream. It brims with positivity while simultaneously addressing the confusion faced by the desire to keep up. The guitar lines cascade like sparkling waterfalls beneath the angelic voices of frontwomen Nat Hutton and Minnie Robberds. The innocence of the statements come to the fore in Picture, the desire to be represented as we truly are through a simple portrait. There are shades of Beach House, The Chills, a touch of The Hinds at their more plaintive as they meander through brittle winter sunlight. North Wing breaks down to a single acoustic guitar intro before building up again to bring in the rest of the band, recalling First Aid Kit, as they continue on the sombre EP closer, Nightmare.
This EP is the first taste we have had of this new quartet and the future is definitely bright for them. Dance With Me Before We Cry is a wonderful set of songs, with a songwriting ability that belies their years, and will hopefully see them garner many fans for their full debut album. It will be one that we will await with bated breath.
