SOPHIE Obituary:pop visionary, musician and trans icon, has sadly died following an accident in Athens
SOPHIE, the pop visionary, musician and trans icon, has sadly died following an accident in Athens.
A statement from SOPHIE’s management team read “It is with profound sadness that I have to inform you that musician and producer SOPHIE passed away this morning around 4am in Athens, where the artist had been living, following a sudden accident.
At this time respect and privacy for the family is our priority. We would also ask for respect for her fanbase, and to treat the private nature of this news with sensitivity.”
The statement also described SOPHIE as “a pioneer of a new sound, one of the most influential artists in the last decade. Not only for ingenious production and creativity but also for the message and visibility that was achieved. An icon of liberation.”
Further details of the accident were revealed by SOPHIE’s record label Transgressive when they said “True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and slipped and fell.”
Born in Glasgow, SOPHIE became the first openly trans artist to be nominated for a Grammy, for their debut album, Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides. SOPHIE’s management have said that they would be remembered not only for their music, but “also for the message and visibility that was achieved. An icon of liberation.”
SOPHIE kept their identity a secret until the release of a video for the 2017 single It’s Okay To Cry, which put an end to people guessing who SOPHIE actually was.
SOPHIE’s music was a breathtaking mix of pop, dance music, industrial and anything else that caught their magpie eye. Their album was a wonderful record full of angular, clever and unconventional music that saw huge beats fight with industrial sounds and chest-thumping bass, where discord and surprise awaited around every corner. And yet the sound these disparate and uncommercial noises made when they came together was cool ultramodern pop music.
Every track on Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides holds a surprise of some kind and in SOPHIE we saw an artist it is impossible to catagorise, their creativity taking the form of a restless spirit looking for the best way to express all their feelings and refusing to be tied down to one particular sound or category.
An album of wonders, to journey through Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides is to take a trip through one of the most inventive and original voices in modern music.
FKA Twigs described SOPHIE as “a star of our generation” while Grimes said “I can’t stop crying enough to know what to say.“ Chris from Christine and the Queens tweeted “She rebelled against the narrow, normative society by being an absolute triumph, both as an artist and as a woman. I can’t believe she is gone. We need to honor and respect her memory and legacy. Cherish the pioneers.”
