YES release single “The Ice Bridge” for upcoming studio album ‘The Quest’

YES, who are Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes, Jon Davison and Billy Sherwood, recently announced they will release their new studio album The Quest on InsideOutMusic/Sony Music on October 1st, 2021. Now they have revealed the first track to be taken from the album – “The Ice Bridge”. You can watch the video here:

The Quest was recorded across the globe and produced by Steve Howe. “Much of the music was written in late 2019 with the rest in 2020. We commissioned several orchestrations to augment and enhance the overall sound of these fresh new recordings, hoping that our emphasis on melody, coupled with some expansive instrumental solo breaks, keeps up the momentum for our listeners,” said Steve.

The sessions took place in the UK with Steve Howe, Geoff Downes & Jon Davison, while Alan White & Billy Sherwood got together in the studio in the US. “Billy Sherwood and myself did all the rhythm sections, bass and drum, in America,” says Alan White, “down in Los Angeles at Uncle Studios, where he works a lot. It helps when you’ve got a good place to work,” Alan laughs, “and Billy’s really good on the recording desk, so we got things down relatively quickly. I spent quite a while studying the music before I went down to LA so I was prepared.”

Alan White comments: “I’m extremely proud to be a part of this music and believe the video graphics are outstanding. A collaboration of many talents coming together to produce ‘The Ice Bridge’. I hope our fans/audiences will appreciate the creativity put forward. I’m pleased to share it with the world and hope everyone will enjoy the ride.”

Steve Howe adds: “’The Ice Bridge’ opens the album in the dark and moody key of C minor, aided by the orchestra. The rolling bass part kicks things into gear as the vocals and guitars start a winding journey through the various structures till the breakdown happens, where ice breaking is heard.”

Jon Davison was working with Geoff Downes on The Ice Bridge (Davison/Downes), looking at the dangers of climate change. He explained how he sets about collaborating with his bandmates.

“Usually what happens is each member is left to write their respective parts and put their stamp on things. Geoff sent me a selection of exciting and often gorgeous snippets he had created and made it clear that he wished I experiment freely and develop as needed. This, in turn, gave me the confidence to take on the vocal role – lyrics, vocal melody and harmony, how the vocals are presented and uniquely phrased – but all the while striving to stay faithful to Geoff’s initial ideas.”

“Jon’s vocals are fantastic,” adds Geoff Downes, “he’s really come into his own as a YES vocalist. This time he’s started to get the writing side together and working with the other musicians has been developmental for him. I think he’s hit a rich seam on this one.”

The Quest is also now available for pre-order on various formats, including a Limited Deluxe Box-Set that features a Gatefold 180g 2LP on exclusive colored vinyl, 2CD+Blu-ray Digipak (featuring 5.1 mix & backing tracks), 36-page perfect-bound booklet, enamel pin badge, 60x90cm poster, slipmat & hand-numbered certificate of authenticity, all housed in a rigid lift-off box.

YES Keyboard Legend Tony Kaye To Release Solo Album “End Of Innocence”

Keyboard legend Tony Kaye announces the release of his debut solo album “End Of Innocence,” on September 10th, 2021 on Spirit Of Unicorn Music (distributed via Cherry Red Records) to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Having retired from music in 1996, Kaye was moved, by the events of 11th September 2001, to commit his thoughts and feelings to a heartfelt personal musical interpretation.

“End Of Innocence” is a requiem for those who lost their lives and all those touched by the horrific events of 9/11. Primarily orchestral, “End Of Innocence” is a powerful and emotional suite that is both beautiful and sinister, reflecting the dark forces at work that day. It guides the listener through the day and touches on the response, to reach a hope that peace and calm may prevail.

As did many millions, Kaye watched the horrors of 9/11 unfold on his TV screen. “The next day I unpacked my keyboards for the first time in a long time,” Kaye recalls. “I didn’t know what I was going to do. It was one of those things that happened, inspiration on a musical level.”

The suite begins the night before 9/11 but, as Kaye’s wife Dani Torchia sings an innocent lullaby, menacing storms are gathering. The beautiful “9/11 Overture” was the first piece Kaye composed, the following day. “I had no recording equipment, just an 8-track cassette recorder and some of those recordings became what you hear now.”

Kaye continues to create vivid images of New York City life and a vibrancy around The World Trade Centre (285 Fulton Street) before the terror begins and captures the fears of those on the planes, “Flight 11” depicting the conversations stewardesses had with the tower. The track includes a powerful drum solo by Kaye’s friend Jay Schellen (CIRCA, YES) reflecting the struggles onboard.

Following the collapse of the towers, Dani Torchia sings her lament “Sweetest Dreams” and the album looks at the “Aftermath” and the “Heroes” before focusing on the response. “I wanted it, musically, to be about that day,” Kaye says, “but I felt compelled to extend it to deal with the repercussions of what happened. Musically, it was quite challenging to do the battle scene and then the ‘Hope And Triumph,’ a patriotic anthem and the consequences of war. ‘Ground Zero’ is the hope for the future, the rebuilding.”

The artwork for the album has been created by Roger Dean, known for his work with YES and ASIA, powerful imagery reflecting the journey the music takes.

“End Of Innocence” Track Listing:
1. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star/Twilight Time
2. 911 Overture

Asia: The Reunion Albums 2007-2012 (Review)

by Geoff Bailie

For fans and band alike, it was a case of “unfinished business” when the original Asia line-up reunited in 2006, 25 years after their debut album took the world by storm. The immediate aftermath of their second album, Alpha, was a run of line-up changes that shattered the quartet, albeit Asia as an entity continued in various guises. The harmony of the 2006 reunion and tour was a delight for fans and while new music wasn’t part of the plan, there followed three studio albums before the amicable (this time) departure of Steve Howe, to allow him to balance Yes and solo requirements.

This fantastic box set is a collection of all that went down during that period. Forgetting about the music for one moment, we get a new Roger Dean cover, each of the 4 albums packaged in a mini card sleeve and a booklet of credits and notes.

Fantasia: Live In Tokyo sets the scene, coming from the first wave of touring. Wikipedia tells me there are 35 Asia Live albums available, and I think this one is probably the best. The band kept the setlist simple: the Asia album, a few tracks from Alpha and a track from each member’s legacy band, including versions of Roundabout, Fanfare, Video Killed the Radio Star and, curiously, In The Court of the Crimson King, a song recorded before John Wetton joined the band, but possibly the best of the 4 covers. It all set the scene for a return to the studio…

Having already reunited for 2 Icon albums, the Downes Wetton partnership had shown it had survived with aplomb. The question about a future Asia studio album would be how or whether Steve Howe would fit into such a situation. The Phoenix tracks showed that the years had taken nothing from the power of the writing and playing in the band. The album features two of the Yes-like long prog tracks, and Steve Howe added 2 great songs to the album. From the introductory Never Again, to the closing anthem, An Extraordinary Life, it remains an impressive album.

Omega, studio album number 11 for the band, was a solid follow-up, cast in a similar mold. It includes the reappearance of the Wetton/ Howe songwriting partnership (responsible for One Step Closer, Without You and Here Comes The Feeling on the debut album) on two of the album’s best tracks, Through My Veins and Light The Way. A resprayed Icon track, Finger on the Trigger opens things up, with the rest of the album being a mix of ballads and rockers, all of great quality.

John Wetton’s death in 2017 means that 2012’s XXX is the final studio album from the original four, recorded in the same studio as its two predecessors. The title reflects the 30th anniversary of the debut album, and once again, the Wetton/ Downes team dominate with Steve Howe contributing to No Religion and Judas. The album’s single Face on the Bridge is a good song but perhaps a little too similar in style to some of its more famous siblings, but once again, this is a good Asia album, sitting comfortably in the established pattern of the last two albums. What is slightly disappointing, given the era spanning nature of the box set, is that the version of XXX is missing Reno (Silver and Gold), a strong bonus track on the special edition, along with the two other bonus tracks/ alternate mixes. The same can be said about the other studio albums, with Drop A Stone from XXX similarly absent as are the Phoenix acoustic versions.

That minor criticism aside, this is a great one for both collectors and a great overview for fans who may have missed out on this era. Each of the musicians is in incredible form, and sadly this lineup won’t be seen again, but this set serves to honor the extremely strong second lap of this classic lineup!

New Yes book ‘A Visual Biography’ to be released July 9th

Yes: A Visual Biography will be published this coming Friday, July 9. The 224 page, A4 hardback book “documents the progressive rock pioneer’s first twelve years from the release of their eponymous debut album through to 1980’s Drama: A suitable name for a band whose career has been full of drama as documented in Popoff’s narrative that charts Yes’s ups and downs as the band glided out of the sixties with a full-on assault on the seventies music scene that saw them become one of the biggest acts in the world—selling out venues from New York’s Madison Square Garden to London’s Wembley Arena.”

Weighing in at over 1.5kg this large format coffee table book is fully illustrated throughout, documenting the story visually from the late sixties through to 1980. As well as an abundance of concert images the stunning photographic content is topped off with many off-stage shots including a selection of photos taken at Morgan Studios in London during the recording of 1973’s audacious and extravagant Tales From Topographic Oceans.

Steve Howe announces the release of Homebrew 7

YES guitarist Steve Howe has announced he is to release the seventh edition of his Homebrew album series on July 30th, via HoweSound. Homebrew 7 marks the 25th anniversary of the guitar legend’s first album in his Homebrew collection.

The Homebrew series typically features recordings from Steve Howe’s home archive of demos and tracks, originally recorded for one of his many solo or group projects with YES, ASIA, ABWH or GTR. Homebrew 7 differs slightly as none of the tracks have previously been released in any form and there are no plans for any to be rerecorded in the future.

“Many are things I’ve enjoyed saving until the right moment,” says Howe, “and the Homebrew series allows this. Some tracks have matured with my nurturing but others have been recently rediscovered.”

This collection includes tracks from the late seventies through to 2016 in Howe’s extensive range of playing styles. Each of the 21 tracks is dated and accompanied by Howe’s background notes and details on instrumentation. Most of the tracks are Howe’s solo recordings with occasional contributions from Dylan Howe and Virgil Howe on drums with Phil Spalding on bass guitar (Half Way). The booklet includes the lyrics for the four vocal tracks and is also illustrated by some of Howe’s delightfully atmospheric photography.
