Sometimes we meet our match with someone who loves us so much that they will kick our ass to save our life. That’s the story of Straight Razor, my girl.“ – Dan Fenton (Vocals / Guitar) Click HERE to Purchase / Stream “Straight Razor” Online! Alice Cooper: Detroit Stories – album review

Alice Cooper: Detroit Stories – album review

CD | 2xLP | DL

Released February 26th 2021

Louder Than War Bomb Rating 4

The veteran shock-rocker born Vincent Furnier returns to his roots with a boisterous celebration of the Motor City’s storied hard-rock scene of the ’60s and ’70s.

Who would have thought that three of the most life-affirming albums released during the Covid-19 pandemic would be by septuagenarian, old-school rockers? Following hot on the heels of Blue Oyster Cult’s ferocious comeback The Symbol Remains and AC/DC’s Lazarus-like return on Power Up, Alice Cooper has followed up his 2019 back-to-the-source Breadcrumbs EP with a full-length album that pays homage to Detroit’s original high-energy rock & roll scene which gave the world The Stooges, The MC5, Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, The Rationals, Bob Seger and of course, the Alice Cooper group.

Detroit Stories includes cover versions of key songs from the Detroit rock scene’s glory days, mixed with a glut of new songs that bristle with the raw pre-punk energy of the MC5 circa Back in the USA and High Time, the politically-charged group’s second and third albums respectively. The album also features a number of Detroit/Michigan luminaries, including Wayne Kramer of the MC5 and Mark Farner of the influential Flint, Michigan group Grand Funk Railroad, along with the surviving members of the original Alice Cooper group and blues-rock virtuoso Joe Bonamassa.

The frenetic blue-eyed soul of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels lit the blue touch-paper for a whole generation of Detroit and Michigan rock groups, so it’s fitting that Cooper should kick off Detroit Stories with a tip of the hat to Ryder, a cover of the Velvet Underground’s Rock & Roll that’s very faithful to the style of Ryder’s own cover of the song by his post-Detroit Wheels group, simply named Detroit. The similarity is perhaps not surprising, given the  presence of the group’s guitarist Steve Hunter and drummer, Detroit legend Johnny ‘Bee’ Badanjek, on the track.

Next up is the punky rock & roll of Go Man Go, one of the standout tracks on an album that maintains a high quality across the majority of its 15 tracks. Go Man Go is the first of several high-octane garage rock tracks that characterise this energised album, including Social Debris, Hail Mary, Independence Dave and an ebullient cover of the MC5’s Sister Ann.  There’s plenty of variety on offer too, with the twisted pop of Our Love Will Change the World, the soulful strut of $1,000 High Heel Shoes and the bluesy swagger of Drunk and in Love.

Given the excesses of Cooper’s lifestyle in the ’70s and early ’80s, it’s astonishing to find that his singing voice has barely changed, remaining a fiery cocktail of louche Jim Morrison croon, feral Iggy Pop snarl and gleeful Frank Zappa leer, perfectly adept at delivering the various shades of garage rock, soul and blues on Detroit Stories with aplomb.

It’s no surprise that original Alice Cooper producer Bob Ezrin is back at the helm for this, Cooper’s 21st solo album. Unsurprisingly, Ezrin steers an assured path through the varied musical currents of Detroit Stories, resulting in a lengthy album that nevertheless hangs together as a cohesive whole.

Cooper’s final Detroit story is simultaneously a salute to another Mid-West musical hero and a nod to Furnier’s own roots in East Detroit – a blazing cover of East Side Story, originally a hit for Bob Seger and The Last Heard in 1966. Essentially a revved-up rewrite of Them’s Gloria, East Side Story’s original lyrics are expanded by Cooper as this natural-born entertainer leaves us with one final tale of life in the Motor City. After a thoroughly miserable, locked-down year for many of us, the unabashed joi de vivre that 73 year-old Cooper brings to these songs is impossible to resist.

VIDEO: Alice Cooper celebrates his 73rd birthday with release of new single “Social Debris”

Alice Cooper

Happy Birthday to the legendary Alice Cooper!

At 73, he proves he is still one of the best and most relevant rock artists. In celebration, Alice has released “Social Debris” from his upcoming studio album “Detroit Stories”. To celebrate the special occasion in style, Alice Cooper has decided to offer “Social Debris” as free download for 24 hours on the artist´s website: www.alicecooper-detroitstories.com

“The single “Social Debris” is a gift to Detroit, to my fans and to myself”, says Alice Cooper. “The track was written by the original Alice Cooper band.

We never thought that we would ever fit in; the Alice Cooper band didn’t fit in with anybody, because we were doing things that no other band did. We didn’t fit in with the folk scene, we didn’t fit in with the metal scene, we really didn’t fit in with anything that was going on at that time. We just always felt like we were outsiders. We felt like we were social debris, we were in our own little world. So “Social Debris” was just the original band writing a song about us, essentially. And it came out sounding like it belonged into 1971. That’s just the original band – you can’t change that, it’s great.”

Alice Cooper releases “Our Love Will Change The World”

Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper has released the second single from his upcoming new studio album “Detroit Stories,” which will be released on February 26 via earMUSIC.

Our Love Will Change The World” comes with innocent and hopeful melodies and joyous up-beat tempo and an overall happy atmosphere.

But is that really what the lyrics are telling us about?

Alice himself explains: “I think “Our Love Will Change The World” is one of the oddest songs I’ve ever done and it was one that came to us by somebody else, another Detroit writer. And it was so strange, because it was happy and what it was saying was anything but happy – it was simply a great juxtaposition. And I got it immediately and said “okay, this is going to be great”. The music saying one thing and the lyrics saying something else, I love that song. It is totally different from anything else on the album.

“Detroit Stories,” Alice’s upcoming new album, is a celebration of the sound and spirit of the Golden Era of Detroit rock.

“Detroit was Heavy Rock central then,” explains Alice, “You’d play the Eastown and it would be Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent, the Stooges and the Who, for $4! The next weekend at the Grande it was MC5, Brownsville Station and Fleetwood Mac, or Savoy Brown or the Small Faces. You couldn’t be a soft-rock band or you’d get your ass kicked.”

“Los Angeles had its sound with The Doors, Love and Buffalo Springfield,” he says, “San Francisco had the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. New York had The Rascals and The Velvet Underground. But Detroit was the birthplace of angry hard rock. After not fitting in anywhere in the US (musically or image wise) Detroit was the only place that recognized the Alice Cooper guitar driven, hard rock sound and our crazy stage show. Detroit was a haven for the outcasts. And when they found out I was born in East Detroit… we were home.”

50 years later, Alice and Ezrin have united in Detroit with their Detroit friends to record “Detroit Stories,” Cooper’s new album.

If 2019’s “Breadcrumbs” EP laid down the trail to the city, “Detroit Stories” drives like a muscle car right down Woodward Ave.

Discover Detroit Stories as they were meant to be told.

Alice Cooper unveils cover of Velvet Underground track “Rock ‘N’ Roll”

Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper has released “Rock & Roll” as a first taste of the upcoming studio album “Detroit Stories,” coming February 26, 2021 on earMUSIC

“Rock & Roll,” a classic song by The Velvet Underground from the album “Loaded,” is not a casual choice: It´s a song of joy and celebration of that magical moment when we all first turned on Rock and Roll radio …and it saved our lives.

Here are some interesting Detroit Stories for the fans of rock and roll trivia and for those who believe that nothing happens by chance (especially in Detroit).

In 1971, the Alice Cooper Group was working in Detroit, with producer Bob Ezrin.

Around the same time, also in Detroit, a band called… Detroit, which featured Mitch Ryder, Johnny Bee and Steve Hunter, recorded a heavy new arrangement of Lou Reed’s “Rock & Roll” also produced by… Bob Ezrin.

It was when he heard that version that Lou Reed decided to work with Ezrin on the follow-up to his monster hit album “Transformer.” Their collaboration produced the seminal and fascinating classic album “Berlin.”

But wait, there is more!

Steve Hunter, the amazing guitar player who created the iconic main riff that drives Detroit´s cover of the song in 1971, ended up working with Ezrin on many of his productions. He toured and recorded with Alice and with Lou Reed as well…and that same riff is the backbone of this new recording of the song which was done in…Detroit, of course.

Alice Cooper and Lou Reed shared a relationship of mutual respect and friendship over the years.  Bob and Lou collaborated several other times and were dear friends for 40 years.

Alice and Bob can’t remember how many albums this is and have been creative partners for 50 years.

Alice’s powerful new version of Lou Reed’s “Rock & Roll” features Johnny “Bee” Badanjek (Detroit Wheels), Steve Hunter (Detroit), Paul Randolph (legendary Detroit jazz and R&B bassist) and special guests Joe Bonamassa and Tommy Henriksen (for this occasion, crowned “Honorary Detroiters”)

Have a listen: Maybe it will save yours too!
